In the world of security doors, diversity is the norm: in Italy, each manufacturer has its own distinctive brand style and technical features. However, there are design standards that make it possible to replace an outdated or damaged lock without changing the entire door. One such standard is the “key entry” value, which is the distance between the key patch and the lock wire. Normally, this distance can be 63 mm or 73 mm, however sometimes this is where complications arise.

Some security door manufacturers choose not to follow these standards, driven by technical or design requirements. When this happens, finding a replacement lock for the security door can become problematic, as the latches of a standard one would be too short to ensure proper locking of the security door.

That’s where MOIA Locks, in the security lock business for more than 60 years, comes in. To address this challenge, MOIA Locks offers several solutions across many product lines with extended deadbolt locks. The extension can vary in “fixed” versions distinguishable by lock code, such as model 664/280DFB+10 whose latches are 10 mm, or one centimeter, longer than the standard. However, the range of MOIA products designed to solve this problem does not end there.

Extended latches for non-standard locks

As we said, some security doors do not meet standard “key entry” values, and in these cases locks with extended latches are required. Extension extensions range from +9 mm to +73 mm, and MOIA offers locks with extended latches and latchbolt for models with double-bit mechanism and European profile cylinder, as well as for multi-system locks, which incorporate two separate locks: a main and a service lock.

Locks with extended latches have the same technical features as standard versions. Take, for example, the 664/370DFB, armored door lock, triple, prepared for European profile cylinder, with silent gear mechanism. The strengths of this MOIA lock are the double anti-breaking trap, the 5-toothed internal mechanism, and the “all-inclusive” attachments that allow proper installation with all the different fasteners available on the market: double-diameter planar, cage nut, and front thread for mortise plate. We also find the same features in the version with extended latches.

Fixed or Modular Extension? The smart solution for installers

MOIA’s design and development department has developed modular solutions known as “Prearranged Extensions” (_PP), complemented by various bolt and latch extension kits. These solutions offer a greater level of versatility than “fixed” versions, allowing them to be easily adapted to specific needs.

These locks are designed with a distinctive feature: each bolt, as well as the latch, has a threaded hole at the end into which a specially designed Extension Kit can be screwed. This crucial detail opens the door to an unparalleled level of flexibility for any installer.

Thanks to Extension Kits (KIT/PR), MOIA Locks puts in the hands of installers and customers a range of extensions ranging from +10 mm to +70 mm, thanks to which it is possible to adapt _PP locks to the most diverse situations, where the distance between the key input and the mullion is outside conventional standards. Take as an example the 664/280DFB_PP lock, equipped with a reversible latch and 4 modular extendable latches: we can associate as many as 7 different extension kits with this security lock, which include 4 for the latches and one for the latch (or half-turn).

The basic idea is elegant in its simplicity and safety, as it offers an immediate and versatile response to oversized installations without having to make structural changes on the door.
